Five steps for designing a useful communications plan:
1. Understand – what your product means to people, what it can deliver, what it cannot fix, what emotions it inspires and why anyone should care.
2. Unpack – internal politics shapes how things are packaged before it even gets to a comms team. So work out what is true and relevant. Research and ask questions.
3. Plan – think through what materials are needed, what detail is required, what opportunity exists, how to create space.
4. Create – do the work of compiling help guides and comprehensive FAQs, put together information packs, pull together visuals, get quotes, and generally have sufficient volumes of standardised documentation ready and waiting.
5. Engage – this is the final step, not the first step. And if you’ve done the steps above, then your customers, partners and even your critics will know that they are valued, respected and appreciated.
